Trump fundraising for GOP senators ahead of possible impeachment trial

Republican leadership have assigned Rep. Jim Jordan to serve on the House Intelligence Committee during the open impeachment hearings against President Trump next week.

Nunes's letter also noted that the House Intelligence Committee should not be taking the lead on the impeachment inquiry based on precedent and lack of jurisdiction over the complaint. Earlier on Thursday, Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence, testified behind closed doors for several hours on Capitol Hill; and House panels leading the impeachment inquiry released a transcript from their interview with George Kent, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, who is scheduled to testify in open session next week.

The appointment comes as some Republicans have privately questioned whether Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee, was prepared to mount a solid defense for Trump on the committee, the Los Angeles Times reported.

As for Crawford, he'll get his seat on Intelligence back after the impeachment proceedings conclude, McCarthy said, calling the Arkansas Republican "an exemplary member".

"Jim Jordan has been on the front strains in the fight for fairness and fact", McCarthy acknowledged. "When it's executed, Rick will rejoin the committee and resume his work to preserve our nation stable".

The closed-door depositions in the impeachment inquiry were handled by three panels - Intelligence, Oversight and Foreign Relations committees.

Jordan, a ranking member on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, said Republicans have been asked to submit a list of their witnesses. While Opt up. Adam Schiff became the public face for the Democrats in impeachment as chair of the Intelligence Committee, Republicans relied on Jordan, Opt up.

"We'll see if he gives us any of our witnesses", Jordan told reporters on Thursday, referring to Schiff.

Democrats in the House launched an impeachment investigation after an intelligence official made a whistleblower complaint about a July 25 telephone call in which Trump pressed his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate political rival Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

The first public hearings will take place next Wednesday and Friday.

Their testimony follows the release the transcripts of several other witnesses who testified for the probe last month, including Taylor, who described an "informal" channel of communication between US officials regarding Ukraine policy, which focused heavily on how to get Ukraine to investigate 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden.
