Lewis Hamilton is F1 champion and Schumacher record threat

"I definitely thought that getting anywhere near Michael was just so far-fetched". Once he stepped away from the spotlight, my interest kind of waned, well, until the era of Lewis Hamilton began.

Before the race, Hamilton had said he is not thinking about sealing the Texas title, only about winning the race.

Fast forward 10 years - Lewis Hamilton had joined the McLaren team.

'When it ends up like this, one driver wins the race, the other wins the championship, the script can not be any better.

His success in finishing second at the United States Grand Prix moved him one title ahead of the legendary Argentine Juan Manguel Fangio and within one title of German Michael Schumacher.

He also paid homage to Mercedes's former non-executive chairman, the late Niki Lauda, saying, "And Niki, I miss him so much. I grew up watching him on the TV and huge congratulations to him".

Hamilton said: "As a kid growing up in Stevenage, it was a wish to win an F1 race and a dream to win a championship, so to be standing here today representing my country, is such an incredible honour and beyond what I could have ever imagined".

"I don't believe in the whole cloud nine thing".

"I would say that I didn't think losing Niki was going to hit me as hard as it did", Hamilton continued.

Whatever your opinion of Hamilton out of the vehicle, he is, without doubt, the greatest F1 driver the United Kingdom has ever produced, not just because of his undoubted talent, but his seemingly endless reserves of "will to win"; in a race he could have coasted to fifth or sixth and still taken the title he fought like a terrier for the win - and almost pulled it off.

He added: "It's just overwhelming if I'm really honest".

"You can see how motivated Lewis still is, he wants to win every race and get the best result possible", Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff said. "I am focused on being as fit and healthy as I can be and try to enjoy this lovely journey that we call life". I don't think I've had them at a world championship [winning] grand prix before.

Having achieved a lot as his sport's best-known ambassador, Hamilton's curiosity in social points has emerged extra ceaselessly, inviting him scores of controversy - as newest as earlier this month when he posted his issues for the enviroment and declared that the planet was "a messed-up place" he felt he wished to "give up". Every single one of us is struggling with something. "I try to show people that, from the outside, things always look great but it's not always the case". I personally failed with my target this year but he deserved it this year. I still want to have a family one day.

"But I love doing what I do so much that I don't think there's a lot that can particularly stop me in that sense".
