Grenfell Tower: Jacob Rees-Mogg criticised for 'insulting' comments

Some high-rise buildings have been stripped of the inflammable cladding without it replacement insulation being fitted, making residents vulnerable to cold weather.

"He talked about going against the 'stay-put policy" but people died in the staircases'.

"The more one's read over the weekend about the report and about the chances of people surviving, if you just ignore what you're told and leave, you are so much safer", said Mogg, leader of the House of Commons. The council "saved" £293,000 by draping Grenfell Tower with this rather than fire-resistant cladding.

In addition, Architect's Journal reported that "the "decorative" architectural crown of the tower also played a 'significant role in enabling the fire to spread around the building.'" The cladding was made by the US company Arconic and the fire is believed to have been sparked by a faulty Whirlpool refrigerator. "It just seems the common sense thing to do", said Mr. Mogg on live national radio.

He said there would have been fewer fatalities if an evacuation order had been given an hour or more earlier.

Ms Cotton was responding on Tuesday to questions at the London Assembly about the inquiry report into the fatal 2017 blaze which was released last week.

Stormzy wasn't the only person to criticise Rees-Mogg's comments.

Rapper and singer Stormzy also called the politician "an actual piece of shit" and demanded his resignation.

"Bare of you politicians are evil". 72 people died in a tragedy that you are to blame for ... "It's nuts to me". However, Matt Wrack, the general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, disputed this characterization to the BBC: "The truth is that the fire spread the way it did because it was wrapped in flammable cladding", he said.

The Justice 4 Grenfell group described the remarks by the British MP as "appalling".

It added: "It is extremely painful and insulting to bereaved families".

The Labour leader hit out at the Tories.

- #MERKY (@stormzy) November 5, 2019And back to this pussyhole @Jacob_Rees_Mogg - these are the people in charge of our country and they think that the grenfell fire victims died coz they were just stupid.

Asked about a review of the stay-put advice, which inquiry chairman Sir Martin Moore-Bick said should have been abandoned sooner, she told the committee it was not a fire brigade policy.

Rees-Mogg hastily apologised, claiming he meant to say he would 'have also listened to the fire brigade's advice to stay and wait'.

"I would hate to upset the people of Grenfell if I was unclear in my comments". "That's the great tragedy", he added.

As mayor of London, Boris Johnson closed 10 London fire stations, took 30 fire engines out of service and slashed over 500 firefighter jobs to "save money".

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn said Rees-Mogg's comments were "crass and insensitive".
