During the provincial election in April, voters could vote at any advance poll location or vote at any polling location on election day but Nyirfa said that is not the case for the federal election and every voter must vote at their specific location.

"At the last election, more electors than ever voted early at advance polls", said chief electoral officer Stéphane Perrault in a news release on Wednesday.

Advance polls open Friday and stay open through the Thanksgiving long weekend.

If you don't have ID, you can still vote if you declare your identity and address in writing and have someone who knows you and who is assigned to your polling station to vouch for you.

"If you have not received a voter information card in the mail it is best to contact Elections Canada at 1-800-463-6868 and you can find out where your advance poll location is or you can go online to the voter information service at elections.ca".

Voter turnout across Canada was 68.5 per cent in the 2015 federal election - the highest since 1993.

You can also get involved by applying to work at the polls themselves. All you need to do is bring ID to vote. It could happen that my neighbor across the street could vote at a different polling station then me.

For the first time, Elections Canada will be cross-referencing its voter list after the election with information with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada - and any cases of non-citizen votes will be referred to the Commissioner of Canada Elections. If you live overseas, you can also ask any Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate for the list. If you write only the name of a political party, your vote won't be counted.

"And we'll be saving on the cost of printing out those large paper ballots by switching to these paper slips", she noted. Make sure to return your marked ballot to us by election day at 6:00 p.m., ET. And though you still may be 17 right now, you can actually register to get on the voters list in advance right here.
