House Democrats Subpoena EU Envoy to Testify in Impeachment Probe

Earlier on Monday, the Democratic committee chairs issued a subpoena to compel the testimony of EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland, a key figure in the inquiry, after the White House signaled that it would block his appearance before Congress. The investigators are interested in what the ambassador knew and what his role was in Trump's efforts to get Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, who leads the field of potential challengers to the Republican president.

You have denied the President the right to cross-examine witnesses, to call witnesses, to receive transcripts of testimony, to have access to evidence, to have counsel present, and many other basic rights guaranteed to all Americans.

Whether Yovanovitch will appear has been thrown into question by the White House's assertion that it will not cooperate with what it now considers an illegitimate impeachment inquiry of the president.

Progressive activists have been credited for keeping the heat on lawmakers to hold Trump accountable for his misconduct, and advocacy groups are continuing to mobilize to ensure House Democrats follow through with their inquiry.

Sondland's attorney, Robert Luskin, said his client was "profoundly disappointed" that he wouldn't be able to testify.

A characteristically sarcastic George Conway, husband to White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, was unsurprised by the news that Sondland would not be testifying, tweeting: "But we were all so looking forward to his testimony about the world's most ideal presidential phone call".

In a fiery response, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the letter "manifestly wrong".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday said President Trump is "obstructing Congress from getting the facts" it needs in the impeachment inquiry after his administration blocked a U.S. diplomat from testifying before three committees.
