Almost 300 people were arrested on Monday (Oct 7) in central London during the first day of mass protests by Extinction Rebellion which demand much more urgent action against climate change.

Julie Hotchkiss, a senior NHS worker from Appley Bridge, was taken into custody by police in Westminster on Tuesday morning.

Organizers said they expected 30,000 people to take part in the United Kingdom protests, and that similar actions would take place in major cities around the world.

"We're here because the government is not doing enough on the climate emergency", protester Lizzy Mansfield said.

The protest was organized by climate activism organization Extinction Rebellion, according to CNBC.

Ms Platt went on to accuse the Government of having "deaf ears" over the issue.

London police have made almost 500 arrests as climate-change protesters, labelled "uncooperative crusties" by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, continue two weeks of civil disobedience to push for more to be done to protect the environment.

The group said the protests Monday were taking place in 60 cities worldwide.

Police said the protests were peaceful.

In Sydney, protesters staged a sit-in on a main road.

"I don't know that shutting the city down necessarily wins you many friends", Victoria's State Premier Daniel Andrews said, while defending their right to protest.

Some activists, organized around six blocking points, expressed their relief that the police had not intervened, such as Errico, 20 years old, a student used to university blockades but not a member of Extinction Rebellion, who came "curiously to see how popular this movement is". They earlier set up a tent camp outside German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office out of dissatisfaction with her government's climate policy.

In Berlin, 300 people blocked Potsdamer Platz, placing couches, tables, chairs and flowerpots on the road.

A spokesman for the group said: "Two Lewes residents even glued their hands and feet to the road, making it more hard to remove them".

"We need to take this seriously", said Kate Petriw, who joined the protest in Toronto this morning.
