Astronauts replacing old batteries in 1st of 5 spacewalks

Well, in September, Jessica joined the team at the I.S.S. and brought an extra space suit with her so now the first all-female spacewalk can happen, reports. "The first is Sunday; Koch will go out with Andrew Morgan".

"I have the battery", said Koch, holding the nickel-hydrogen battery.

Astronauts have been upgrading these batteries since 2017 and they're halfway done.

"Wow, it is attractive", said Morgan ahead of schedule in the spacewalk, responding to the sun ascending as he looked off the side of the station at Earth underneath.

Grand Rapids native Christina Koch and fellow astronaut Andrew morgan had to remove a pair of old batteries and install a new one. These new batteries are so powerful that only one is needed for every two old ones.

On Friday, NASA said during a press briefing that the first all-female spacewalk with astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir is scheduled for 21 October. The two additionally repositioned battery moving apparatuses and relaxed the torque on jolts verifying two nickel-hydrogen batteries in anticipation of the following spacewalk.

Before the month is over, NASA said a total of five spacewalks will complete the mission on October 16, October 21 and October 25. Five more USA spacewalks by Morgan and Parmitano are slated to follow in November to fix the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) cosmic-ray detector.

"You have the battery", affirmed Morgan.

Koch arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) in March and was to go on a spacewalk with astronaut Anne McClain, but the event was postponed as there was only one medium-sized suit on the station.

While Koch, who holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University, is a natural choice for the battery replacement mission, the operation will be the first spacewalk for Meir, a marine biologist. "In addition, no one training environment can fully simulate performing a spacewalk in microgravity, and an individual may find that their sizing preferences change in space".

Meir also requires a medium HUT for her spacesuit, but that won't be a problem this time around, because NASA has had plenty of time to prep another medium suit since March.

Koch, who arrived on the space station in March, is on her way to set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, surpassing Peggy Whitson, who in April became the American with the most overall space time.

Sunday's EVA was both Koch's and Morgan's second spacewalks.

NASA's deputy chief astronaut Megan McArthur told reporters the all-female spacewalk will be a milestone. Astronauts and cosmonauts have now spent 1,374 hours and 27 minutes, or 57.3 days, working outside the orbiting complex.
