'They're Shooting Right There': Multiple Fatalities Reported After Active Shooting in Odessa

Police report that the ages of those killed in the West Texas shooting rampage range from 15 to 57. On Aug. 3, a 21-year-old gunman opened fire at a shopping center in El Paso - no more than 500 km away from Odessa - killing 22 people and injuring at least two dozen. It is believed he was acting alone and no motive was determined, The New York Times reported.

Midland Mayor Jerry Morales said hundreds of people were enjoying the holiday weekend inside the Cinergy complex when the gunman was confronted by officers who boxed in his vehicle in the parking lot before shots were exchanged.

Also on August, less than 14 hours after the El Paso shooting, a gunman wearing body armor shot and killed nine people at a popular nightlife area in Dayton, Ohio.

In the chaos that followed, the suspect hijacked the mail carrier truck, Mary Granados, 29, and fired at random, investigators said.

Two troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety stopped a lone driver during a traffic stop on westbound Interstate 20 in Midland, authorities said.

Family and friends have named two of the wounded victims as Zack Owens, a Midland police officer, and Anderson Davis, a 17-month-old girl. Abbott says the mother texted: "Her mouth is pretty bad, but will heal and can be fixed".

Later, as Trump attended a briefing at the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Hurricane Dorian, he said he is committed to finding ways to "substantially reduce" the frequency of mass shootings by keeping firearms out of the hands of risky people, imposing harsher penalties for gun-related offenses, and expanding mental-health services. "Too many Texans are in mourning. The status quo in Texas is unacceptable, and action is needed", Abbott said.

But Abbott, a Republican, remains noncommittal about imposing any new gun laws in Texas at a time when Democrats and gun-control groups are demanding restrictions.

The driver grabbed a rifle and fired at the troopers' patrol vehicle, wounding one of them, according to Lt. Elizabeth Carter of Texas DPS.

The shooting happened hours before a series of firearm laws go into effect in Texas, where four of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history have happened.

At one point armed police ran through the Music City Mall in Odessa, forcing anchors for television station CBS 7, located inside, to duck off-screen as the building went into lockdown. "It was insane. He was just everywhere".

Donald Trump said he would be working with lawmakers on gun legislation when Congress returns this month. The number of people killed this year has already reached 142, surpassing the 140 people who were killed of all last year. "Luckily I got down". Sure enough, I hear the shots go off.
