ISRO completes de-orbital operation of moon lander Vikram

During the landing module's powered descent to the moon's surface, ISRO will oversee two deorbit (orbit-lowering) manoeuvres on 3 and 4 September respectively.

The landing module of India's unmanned moon mission separated successfully from the orbiter on Monday ahead of its planned touchdown on the moon's south polar region this weekend, the country's space agency said.

New Delhi: The scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have today sent Vikram Lander into the opposite orbit at 8.50 am on September 3.

The first data from the rover, Pragyan, will come through about 5.8 hours after landing.

It added, "The health of the Orbiter and Lander is being monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru".

Giving details about the progress of the ambitious mission, the space agency informed that the soft landing of Chandrayaan-2 Vikram lander on lunar surface is scheduled between 1:30 am to 2:30 am on Saturday, September 07, 2019.

After this, its class will be changed again around 4 pm on 4 September. Their minimum distance from Moon is 119 km and maximum distance is 127 km.

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft has three segments - the Orbiter (weighing 2,379 kg, eight payloads), the lander Vikram (1,471 kg, four payloads) and rover Pragyan (27 kg, two payloads).

Launched on July 22, its lander named "Vikram" will attempt to make a soft-landing on the Lunar surface on September 7.

The lander and rover will carry out experiments to find water on the lunar surface and map for chemicals and topography.

Chandrayaan 2 was launched from Satish Dhawan space centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh by India's heavy-lift rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV Mk III) on July 22.
