Hurricane Dorian: Florida residents preparing for "extremely dangerous" storm

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday night that Dorian had become an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 130 miles per hour (215 kph).

Trump cancelled a visit to Poland scheduled for the weekend and Florida's governor expanded a state of emergency to prepare for Hurricane Dorian, which is forecast to make landfall on the Atlantic coast Monday as a unsafe Category 4 storm. The good news is that it will likely avoid all of the Caribbean and Atlantic islands, avoiding direct impact to the Turks and Caicos Islands and Bahamas.

"The winds seem to be building at a tremendous rate".

President Donald Trump canceled his trip to Poland and said he will send Vice President Mike Pence in his place this weekend so that he can stay in Washington and monitor Hurricane Dorian.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in 12 counties to assist with storm readiness, response and recovery. Police said an 80-year-old man in the town of Bayamon died after he fell trying to climb to his roof to clear it of debris ahead of the storm.

Along Florida's Atlantic coast, local governments began distributing sandbags, shoppers rushed to stock up on food, plywood and other emergency supplies at supermarkets and hardware stores, and motorists topped off their fuel tanks and filled gasoline cans.

After making landfall, Dorian was forecast to linger over central Florida on Tuesday, according to the NHC.

"The storm looks like it could be a very, very big one indeed", Trump said in the Rose Garden during an event to officially establish the US Space Command. Tropical storm winds could be felt in Florida as soon as Saturday evening. "The trajectory of this storm remains uncertain, and this declaration will provide us with the necessary resources to ensure the state is fully prepared", DeSantis said.
