This will be Clijsters' second comeback, as 10 years ago she already made a triumphant return to the court claiming three out of her four Grand Slam titles.
She initially retired in 2007 aged 23, making a return two years later after having her first child to win her second US Open, then hanging up her racquet again after the 2012 US Open.
"What do I really want from life? I wish Kim all the best in this next chapter of her playing career".
"I feel like I've had more energy these last six months or so than I've had in the last two years because I'm taking care of myself better", Clijsters added. "This is where I'm saying, "OK, let's try this". The mother of three has focused on raising her kids the past seven years, but said in a video she tweeted Thursday that she misses playing pro tennis.
Clijsters last played competitive matches when she was 29 years old, at the 2012 US Open.
Other notable returns to the sport include Martina Navratilova, who retired in 1994 but returned in 2000.
"Kim Clijsters ranks among the greats of the game and her return to the Tour is exciting news for the WTA family and tennis fans around the world", said WTA chairman Steve Simon. "I are desirous to detect how far I will push myself and what level I will get to - and embody the total positives and negatives along the kind". Sitting in a commentary field, watching others command the large levels, has exclusively fuelled her want to return to the locker-room.More news: Body found in Florida pond is man missing since 1997

Clijsters was known as "Aussie Kim" after her relationship with Aussie champion Lleyton Hewitt.
Following back-to-back titles in NY in 2009 and 2010, she also added the 2011 Australian Open to her list of honours.
She stepped down again, apparently for good, seven years ago but now it has emerged she has been planning to return for some time.
"But I also loved being a professional tennis player". She went on to win the 1996 Australian Open.

According to the WTA, Clijsters, who has three children - Jada, Jack, and Blake, is eligible for unlimited wild cards at WTA tournaments but will need to play three events to regain a world ranking.
