Canadian PM Justin Trudeau calls general election

Only one party - the Conservatives, led by Andrew Scheer - has a full candidate roster with representatives in each riding.

"Ontario Premier Doug Ford has reminded Ontarians what a conservative government can be like", said Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and global relations at the University of Toronto.

When Trudeau finished his pitch, he was immediately in the hot seat over SNC-Lavalin, once again.

Asked what his government is hiding, Trudeau says his office gave the largest waiver of cabinet confidences in Canadian history but added anything more.

Mr Scheer said Mr Trudeau "has lost the moral authority to govern" after the Globe and Mail newspaper reported that his Government was stonewalling police who were looking into the SNC-Lavalin scandal, a corporate corruption case that has dogged the Prime Minister this year. There are eight independents - including former Liberal cabinet ministers Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould.

Dion also noted that he too was obstructed by the Privy Council Office from interviewing nine witnesses for his scathing Trudeau II report.

"We respect the decisions made by professional public servants".

"Candidates include veterans, teachers, Indigenous leaders, LGBTQ2 advocates, entrepreneurs, scientists, first responders, Olympians and Paralympians, experienced Parliamentarians, and more - all working hard to build a better future for their communities", said Braeden Caley, head of communications for the Liberal Party of Canada in a statement to CTVNews.ca.

Trudeau's warning of conservative cuts and austerity measures are likely aimed at voters in Ontario, who elected a now unpopular conservative populist in 2018 as government premier.

Asked about demonizing Scheer, recently as a homophobe for skipping Pride then spreading a 14-year-old clip on social media of the Scheer describing "marriage" in the House of Commons as a union between a man and woman, Trudeau claimed he's only about criticizing policy.

"As I said many times I am deeply opposed to Bill 21 in Quebec", Trudeau said. "That is something Canadians deserve in an election, to see clear contrasts".

"We are going to stand firm. We will always stand up for the rights of Canadians, and the rights for expression and the rights of freedom of religion".

"Canadians want to know the truth, and right now it seems that barriers are more and more being put up by the Prime Minister", Singh said.

If SNC-Lavalin is convicted of the charges it bribed officials in Libya almost $50 million to secure lucrative contracts in the failed North African state, the company would be banned from bidding on federal contracts for 10 years.
