AAA: Labor Day weekend gas prices lowest in three years

Drivers in the South - specifically, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Tennessee - faced the cheapest prices at the pump, with gasoline costing less than $2.30 per gallon in all seven states.

"Where we came from, gas was about $2 per gallon", Rosser said.

AAA reports the national gas price average over the holiday weekend will be around $2.59 a gallon.

Drivers can expect the usually clogged roadways bookending Labor Day weekend, with congestion peaking on Friday and again Monday afternoon when most drivers start and end their weekend getaway, according to analyses conducted by the American Automobile Association.

Jarmusz says gas prices typically aren't the deciding factor whether people drive or not, but they are a bit lower this weekend. "So that's a 40 cent difference and that's a lot cheaper on a fill up".
