2nd de-orbiting maneuver for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft performed successfully today

The IPRC director agreed that the lander may have to face some unforeseen challenges while landing soft on moon's surface.

Soon after 'Vikram's nudge to the threshold position, Dr Sivan speaking exclusively to this newspaper, said: "We have done all the tests and simulations to achieve a flawless landing on September 7". Meanwhile, Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter continue to go around the Moon in an orbit of 96 km x 125 km. Chairman of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) K Sivan recently said the space agency "had done everything humanly possible" for the mission's success.

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft will be the first-ever expedition to the south pole of the moon.

With this maneuver, the required orbit for the Vikram Lander to commence it descent towards the surface of the Moon is achieved. Director of Chandrayaan-1, Mylswamy Annadurai spoke to mediapersons on the accomplishment and said, "Chandrayaan -1 has discovered water on the moon and considering that there is a big campaign going on internationally as we are back to the moon that is almost after 50 years". The entire planet will benefit from the mission. "It's going to be a remarkable event and we are all looking forward to that event".

The orbit of Vikram Lander is now 35km x 101km.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with young students-two selected from each state will witness the historic moon landing live from ISTRAC Bengaluru. Chandrayaan-2 began its journey towards the Moon leaving the Earth's orbit in the dark hours on August 14, after a crucial manoeuvre called Trans Lunar Insertion (TLI) that was carried out by ISRO to place the spacecraft on "Lunar Transfer Trajectory".

On the day of the Chandrayaan-1's launch in 2008, the ISRO faced a "very tough situation" as it had a very short launch window and the weather was "very, very bad", Dr. M Annadurai, Project Director of the successful mission, said. The orbiter carries eight scientific payloads for mapping the lunar surface and study the exosphere (outer atmosphere) of the Moon while the lander carries three scientific payloads to conduct surface and subsurface science experiments. Further, the south pole of moon is an unexplored site.
