In the 16 specialty areas, 165 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester once again tops the list of the nation's best hospitals.

The Mayo Clinic was the only hospital to rank in the top five for cardiology and heart surgery, cancer and orthopedics.

The annual Best Hospital rankings and ratings, now in their 30 year, are created to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for health conditions and common elective procedures. "This recognition by U.S. News is one of the key barometers that confirms our dedicated and experienced colleagues are providing high-quality care that our patients need, expect and deserve every day".

"Though not surprising, we found that hospitals that specialize in taking care of the sickest and most challenging patients in a particular specialty tended to get some of the best outcomes and consequently ranked highly in that specialty or specialties", U.S. News Managing Editor and Chief of Health Analysis Ben Harder told FierceHealthcare.

U.S. News also considered for its rankings Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, which placed No. 2 in the state; UnityPoint Health-St. Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai St. Luke's, Mount Sinai West and South Nassau Communities Hospital, the Long Island flagship hospital of Mount Sinai Health System, were all ranked regionally.

This year, more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide were evaluated in 17 adult and child specialties (such as cancer, gynecology, orthopedics and rehabilitation) and nine procedures and conditions (such as heart bypass surgery, hip replacement and lung cancer surgery).

The 30th annual "Best Hospitals" rankings were published on the U.S. News & World Report website on Tuesday, July 30.

Mayo Clinic, which began as a single physician medical practice on the Minnesota prairie in 1864 and for decades has been a global destination for hope and healing, consistently rates among the top US medical centers in independent rankings. "By providing the most comprehensive data available on almost every hospital across the United States, we give patients, families and physicians information to support their search for the best care across a range of procedures, conditions and specialties".
