Trump under fire after 'racist' attack on congresswomen

President Donald Trump has attacked a group of Democratic congresswomen as foreign-born troublemakers who should go back to the "broken and crime infested places from which they came", ignoring the fact the women are American citizens and all but one was born in the US. The lawmakers-Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ilhan Omar- all are U.S. citizens, the Washington Post points out.

"Mr. President, As Members of Congress, the only country we swear an oath to is the United States", Omar, a former Somali refugee and the only lawmaker in the group who wasn't born in the USA, tweeted.

"Trump didn't name the lawmakers but said he was referring to "'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen". More than any of the others in her freshman group, Omar - one of the first two Muslim women in Congress along with Tlaib - has used her personal story to make the argument that loving America does not require an acceptance of its shortcomings.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar have responded via Twitter to the remarks.

Commenting on the president's tweet on Sunday, conservative journalist Salena Zito weighed in on how Trump supporters would receive the comments, which CNN has labeled "straight-up racist".

"We're going to impeach the MF-er", she said.

"Their disgusting language and the many bad things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged", he tweeted.

The controversy was sparked when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi mocked the four Dems for their Twitter-based influence.

Trump has routinely inflamed public debate and in turn rallied his base with comments about race.

"On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you can not accept that we don't fear you, either", Ocasio-Cortez continued. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, jousting for days with Pelosi, said Trump "can't conceive of an America that includes us".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Trump wants to "make America white again".

Trump further asked why these women don't return to their countries of origin to help fix "the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came".

The presidential trolling, just ahead of the weekly political talk shows, seemed guaranteed to light a fire - potentially as a distraction from Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids announced by Trump and due to be carried out in major cities on Sunday.

Ocasio-Cortez is supposed to be debuting some sort of new version of her Green New Deal on Tuesday with Senator Bernie Sanders which Mother Jones suggests will be in the form of a national emergency resolution.

Ms Pressley, the first black woman elected to the United States house from MA, was born in Cincinnati.

"I reject @realDonaldTrump's xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation", she tweeted. The "squad" member with the highest profile, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat-New York, did not attend. "I do it every day when I hold your admin accountable as a US Congresswoman", Tlaib tweeted.
