The Government of Canada is committed to the global goal of reducing the health impact of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI) by 2030. Over 90% of new hepatitis B infections occur through mother-to-child transmission and during the early age of childhood.

"Today, 80 per cent of people living with hepatitis can't get the services they need to prevent, test for, and treat the disease", said WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, adding that on World Hepatitis Day, which will be observed today "we're calling for bold political leadership, with investments to match".

Some countries are already taking action.

"We do not believe that there will be a drop in the number of people we have suffered, and we expect that (in 2019.) There will be about 250-257 million people with hepatitis B. Acute and chronic are the two variants of this strain, while acute refers to a short term infection, chronic hepatitis B can go on for many months.
