The game is being created in partnership with Leyou, a Hong Kong-based video game developer. "Tolkien's Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers - from the same studio developing New World - tremendous opportunity to play and create". So we shouldn't expect any tie-ins between the two, as the game is set in the Lord of the Rings world while the TV series takes place at an earlier time during the Second Age. Leyou have a considerable amount of MMO experience with Warframe developer Digital Extremes also being owned by the company.
Although the game's announced was already done previous year by Athlon's parent company, Leyou Technologies, it was revealed that Amazon is going to be partnering with the developer. It's planned as a free-to-play title for both PC and consoles. Unlike Amazon's adaptation, however, it follows Tolkien's trilogy and lets you see what was going on in the rest of Middle-earth while all this bad business was going down. According to Amazon, the show and the MMO are separate projects, totally unrelated. Athlon Games, a subsidiary of Leyou, had already teased last year it was developing its "LOTR" game last year, saying it was in conjunction with an unnamed "partner developer", as The Verge pointed out. The TV series was also described to be located in Middle-earth long before J.R.R. Tolkien's main sequels. As for the Lord of the Rings franchise and the world of gaming, there has been the popular online game that has been around since 2007.

At the time, the company's publishing partner wasn't known, but now we know it's Amazon.
Despite the lack of connections between the properties, the new MMO will be set many, many years before The Lord of the Rings takes place.
There is no official title for the MMO now and it is unclear when Amazon plans to release it or how long it has been in development for.
