Nine mystery deaths in Dominican prompt questions about poisoning

Over the previous year, at least seven Americans have died and hundreds more have fallen violently ill while visiting Dominican Republic hotels and resorts.

"In the last five years, over 30 million tourists have visited the Dominican Republic, but this is the first time the global media report such an alarming situation", Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia said earlier this month.

A common tie among the deaths has not been established.

What happened in the latest case?

His family had traveled to the Terra Linda Resort in the Dominican city of Sosua for a friend's birthday June 9.

After complaining about not feeling well, friends of Allen told ABC 7 that he chose to go to sleep for the night.

"We're going to go do some of our own grocery shopping", Skylar said.

The next day, he didn't answer knocks on his door.

In May, Miranda Shaup-Werner, 41, of Pennsylvania, collapsed in her hotel room at the same Dominican Republic resort where a couple from Prince George's County was found dead.

Many have, and more seem to be cropping up every day.

"I can't tell you with certainty exactly where my brother's body is, and exactly when my brother's body is going to return to the United States", brother Jason Allen said, according to the magazine. His cause of death has not been released.

David Harrison, 45, died at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana in July a year ago.

The same month John Corcoran died in his hotel room, according to his sister, Barbara Corcoran, who stars on TV show Shark Tank.

Between the beginning of 2017 and the end of 2018, 30 Americans died in the Dominican Republic of non-natural causes, according to the State Department.

Her body was found hours after she checked into the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville.

Local investigators say both had internal bleeding and fluid in their lungs.

The US State Department confirmed the death. Though her death was initially ruled a heart attack, her cause of death is being investigated again.

McCoy said the resort had asked her to contact them when she was preparing to leave with her son soon after her husband's death.

The U.S. embassy in Santo Domingo says there is no proof at this point they're linked.

An estimated two million Americans visited the Dominican Republic in 2018. A couple from Colorado - 29-year-old Kaylynn Knull and 33-year-old Tom Schwander - told CNN they got terribly sick during a visit to the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana in June of last year.

In April of 2019, Robert Wallace, 67, was hospitalized after becoming ill while also staying at the Hard Rock Hotel. Five members of an Oklahoma high school group staying at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino became violently ill after eating at a Japanese restaurant and more than 50 Jimmy Buffett fans were sickened while on an annual trip in April.
