The Ebola crisis that has raged for 10 months in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spread last week to Uganda is not a "public health emergency of worldwide concern" (PHEIC), the World Health Organization's advisory committee has declared, in a decision that baffled some critics.
The patients who died in Uganda had reportedly visited a relative in the Democratic Republic of Congo who was diagnosed with Ebola.
The spread of Ebola in eastern Congo has been "very unpredictable, with up and down trends", he said.
The Ebola alert in eastern Africa follows a finding by the World Health Organisation (WHO) last week that the outbreak in DRC, while not warranting declaration of an global health emergency, was grave enough to pose risks in neighbouring countries. The family had been crossing the border between the two countries to attend the funeral of the boys' grandfather, who died from Ebola in Mabalako.
"It was the view of the committee that the outbreak is a health emergency in DRC and the region, but does not meet the criteria for a public health emergency of worldwide concern", the United Nations health agency's expert committee said in a statement.
Only four emergencies have been declared in the past decade, including the worst ever Ebola outbreak, which hit West Africa in 2014-2016.
