Egypt First Democratic President Dies Of Heart Attack

Egyptian ex-president Mohammed Morsi died following a courtroom collapse Monday, state media reported. "He was quickly rushed to the hospital where he later died", says a judicial source.

One of the top members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and the leader of the Freedom and Justice Party ruled the country between June 2012 and July 2013.

A court in Egypt had sentenced the deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to death for over a mass prison break in 2011.

Morsi, aged 67, died after a court session in his espionage trial ended.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was a Morsi ally, paid tribute to the former leader: "May Allah rest our Morsi brother, our martyr's soul in peace", he said. This is premeditated murder.

The Muslim Brotherhood protested against the military coup, but the pro-Morsi protests were crushed in the Rabaa massacre in August 2013, when more than 800 people were killed. El-Sissi was subsequently elected president and has waged a massive crackdown on Islamists and other opponents since.

He was also serving a life sentence for espionage in a case related to the Gulf state of Qatar. Rights groups have side its poor conditions fall far below Egyptian and worldwide standards.
