They used 16 years of observations from the USA space agency NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, chronicling the universe's evolutionary history in one sweeping view, with almost 7,500 exposures. The faintest and farthest galaxies are just one ten billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see. Galaxies also show when the chemical elements originated and enable the conditions that eventually led to the emergence of life.

"Now that we have gone wider than in previous surveys, we are harvesting many more distant galaxies in the largest such dataset ever produced", said Garth Illingworth, leader of the team that assembled the image at the University of California-Santa Cruz. But it paid off, and now the Hubble Legacy Field image exists as a testament to over a decade of work. The team is now working on a second set of images that total more than 5,200 additional Hubble exposures.

The Hubble Space Telescope has been an essential tool in helping us understand our origins, peering back in time as it photographs the most distant objects in our universe. The result is breathtaking: even more so when you consider that each of those lights is potentially a galaxy, which, like the Milky Way, could contain 100 billion stars. or more.

NASA has spent more time trained on this small area than on any other region of the sky, totalling more than 250 days.

This latest Hubble mosaic consists of around 30 times as many galaxies as previous deep fields did.

The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the most powerful long-term observatories in the entire world, focusing nearly entirely on areas in deep outer space.

NASA's Hubble Telescope has released an image that combined 7500 images from 16 years of surveys that reflects galaxies and stars billions of light years away.

In the case of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, the image captured 10,000 galaxies.

"Such exquisite high-resolution measurements of the numerous galaxies in this catalog enable a wide swath of extragalactic study", said Dr. Katherine Whitaker, an astronomer at the University of CT, in Storrs.

The Hubble is a space-based and long-term observatory. "This will really set the stage for NASA's planned Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST)", Illingworth said.

Next up will be a second Hubble Legacy Field that will contain more than 5,200 Hubble exposures. In fact, this image from Hubble frames a flawless spiral specimen: the stunning NGC 2903.
