Matthijs de Ligt still open to Manchester United transfer


The Ajax centre-back has been strongly linked with a potential move to Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

The Ajax defender earned rave reviews for his performances in the Champions League this season as the Dutch club managed to upset the odds and reach the semi-finals.

Ajax were eventually KO'ed by Tottenham in the semifinals.

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes Matthijs de Ligt would be best off signing for a club like Liverpool or Barcelona.

Addressing thousands of cheering fans in Amsterdam's main square, De Ligt delivered a powerful, moving speech while paying tribute to the legendary Johan Cruyff.

As reported by The Liverpool Echo, Balague said the club have "been talking to him" in an attempt to bring him to England.

Balague spoke about De Ligt and Liverpool during last Thursday's BBC Football Daily podcast.

However, Manchester United do not have Champions League football to offer De Ligt and will face competition from Liverpool and Manchester City among others.

De Jong and De Ligt look set to continue as teammates.

It's claimed that Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich are willing to pay it.

It's now down to the player where he wants to go to.

He added on that Barcelona have struck a deal to sign him, Liverpool are proving to be a stumbling block.

But I feel that he's close - or that's what Barcelona feels, that they're close to getting him.
