Archer, Dawson and Vince named in England’s 15-man final WC squad

Full England squad: Eoin Morgan (capt, Middlesex), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wk), Tom Curran (Surrey), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Liam Plunkett (Surrey), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Vince (Hampshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham). "It was a very hard situation".

David Willey, described as an "outstanding human being who reacted exactly as you'd expect him to" by national selector Ed Smith, can have no real complaints about being the odd man out in a squad brimming with exciting and dynamic possibilities.

There was no place also in a squad, again captained by Eoin Morgan, for back-up spinner and batsman Joe Denly, with Hampshire slow left-armer Liam Dawson - who did not feature against Pakistan - recalled as cover for Adil Rashid, who is nursing a shoulder problem.

Dawson returns to the England set-up for the first time since sustaining a side strain during last October's limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka.

Archer said he was ready for the challenge of a World Cup despite his lack of worldwide experience.

"We've seen Jofra Archer play against Pakistan and we've seen the skills he has", Smith told Sky Sports News.

One-day cricket has always been the poor relation of the global game in England in terms of status.

"We've had some really good prep against Pakistan, I don't think it could have gone better".

As a chip off the old bloke as the son of one of the toughest men in cricket, Peter Willey, David might have been expected to take the call badly, but by all accounts, including his own on Twitter, he took it on the chin. I've played a lot of cricket outside of 50-over so I know how to deal with pressure, crowds and it is because of that other cricket that I wasn't able to play much List A for Sussex.

Archer made his one-day global (ODI) debut against Ireland earlier this month and impressed selectors with his pace and control in that match as well as in England's recent 4-0 series victory over Pakistan. Willey took just 4 wickets at the economy rate of 6.82whereas the all-rounder Denly made just 17 runs and took no wickets in 3 matches.

Archer downplayed any fears his call-up would cause any friction in the squad, saying he had been welcomed "with open arms" by teammates for the three matches he played.

England's players assemble in Southampton on Friday ahead of the first of two warm-up fixtures before the World Cup.

England begin their World Cup campaign against South Africa on May 30.
