White House says Congress not 'smart enough' to assess Trump tax returns

US federal law clearly details that when the chairman of the US House Ways and Means Committee provides a request in writing for any US citizen's tax returns - even a sitting US president - the US Treasury, now headed by Trump appointee Steve Mnuchin, "shall furnish" the documents.

When asked by CNN, the secretary told reporters that the Treasury's Department's legal office has been in consultation with the Justice Department's lawyers.

ICE arrests people in the United States illegally and also manages migrants who present themselves at border crossings and ask for asylum.

"That's the main job of the President, to see that the laws are faithfully executed", Nadler said. Mnuchin so far has only postponed responding to Democrats' request and said he would confer with the Justice Department, but not yet rejected it.

"The chairman gave us a deadline last time".

George Gascon, district attorney for San Francisco, said: "With immigrants being less likely to commit crimes than the US-born population, and with sanctuary jurisdictions being safer and more productive than non-sanctuary jurisdictions, the data damns this proposal as a politically motivated stunt that seeks to play politics with peoples' lives". Police in New York, Baltimore and Seattle, Wash., rarely, if ever, disclose information about when suspected criminals in the US illegally will be released from custody.

He could not say whether the Treasury, which oversees the IRS, would complete its review of Neal's request by April 23. Mnuchin's letter this past week said Neal's request "raises serious issues concerning the constitutional scope of congressional investigative authority". "The legal implications of this request could affect protections for all Americans against politically-motivated disclosures of personal tax information, regardless of which party is in power". He also pointed out that as president he had the legal right to close the Southern Border.

Trump broke with a decades-old precedent by refusing to release his returns as a presidential candidate in 2016 and continues to do so as president, saying his tax returns are under IRS audit.

The president's latest move on illegal immigration comes days after USA officials said they arrested or denied entry to over 103,000 people along the border with Mexico in March, more than twice as many as the same period in 2018.

Scott acknowledged the president's frustration over a lack of progress on addressing the influx of migrants, but said the administration had to comply with the law.

The issue appears sure to end up in federal court.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin addresses a press conference on the sideline of the IMF/WB Annual meetings in Nusa Dua, Bali October 13, 2018.

Republicans have called the request as an overreach of confidential taxpayer data.

"Even if Ways and Means had a legitimate committee objective for requesting the President's tax returns and return information, that goal is not driving Chairman Neal's request", he wrote.
