Ovechkin punch puts Carolina rookie Svechnikov into concussion protocol

Ovechkin fought - and knocked out - Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov in the first period of Game 3 in the teams' first-round series on Monday night.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour said Tuesday he would assume Svechnikov is out for Game 4 against the Washington Capitals on Thursday, according to The Athletic's Chris Kuc.

Sitting in the penalty box moments after jackhammering his right fist into the face of fellow Russian Andrei Svechnikov, Alex Ovechkin plopped a bag of ice on his knuckles.

Svechnikov, a 19-year-old rookie, struggled to stand and was helped off the ice and taken to the dressing room. Svechnikov did not return to the game. However, Washington is still leading the series 2-1. It was just the fourth fight of Ovechkin's career and his first in almost a decade. "He said our guy challenged him", Brind'Amour said after Monday night's game. Brind'Amour said he looks normal but assuming he's out for next game. I'm still sick to my stomach about it. That's the worst part of it that you see when guys get hurt. It's his first fight. So, if that's the case, it's a little different.

Ovi hip checks a guy and goes after Dubinsky. "I'll just leave it at that", he said. He's never fought in his life, and I'm pretty sure Ovi knew that.

The two had been pushing and shoving before dropping the gloves during Game 3 of the first-round playoff match-up, which the defending champ Washington led 2-0 as the series shifted to Carolina. So that stuff bothers me. Ovechkin won in an absolute landslide. He had one goal and two assists in the Capitals' first two games in these playoffs.
