In Game 1 of playoff series, Leafs beat Bruins 4-1

Just as fast as advertised coming into this series, the Toronto Maple Leafs turned into a one-goal hole into a two-goal edge in the blink of an eye in their Game 1 victory over the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

The hustle that forced the Bruins to make mistakes, though: That's something they are planning to do over and over again.

Muzzin's initial point shot was tipped by Marner in the slot before bouncing to the Leafs' forward, who slapped a shot that found iron a second time and dribbled in at 16:44. On his breakaway goal, Nylander redeemed himself for the dumb retaliatory penalty he took in the first period when he was called for high-sticking Bruins defenceman Connor Clifton. "You give away two, three in a row that period, so shame on us".

The Bruins will look to rebound in Game 2 Saturday, take some momentum and an even series back to Toronto for Game 3. Boston struck first but Marner struck twice: first, on a lunging shot after a Jake Muzzin shot was deflected and careened off the post and, second on the penalty shot when Marner flashed his smooth hands, drew the puck backhand and forehand multiple times in tight space and deked past Tuukka Rask. They were swept away from the start a year ago, but this time Toronto dominated the first 10 minutes and most of the first 20. Defensively, the Boston Bruins are allowing four goals per game and are killing 100 percent of their opponents power plays. Tuukka Rask stopped 29 shots for Boston. For at least 10 days, there are four games running each night, with two upsets a day likely.

DeBrusk crashed hard into the boards and appeared to go to the locker room for attention, but returned to the game. I will cheer, even though I'll feel a bit guilty once they get their third win of the series. The Maple Leafs are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings in Boston and 1-4 in the last 5 meetings. "It was a nice move, fresh ice too, so I probably should've recognized that, but yeah, good move". So it must have felt extra good to score the 3-1 goal for the Leafs after being sprung on a breakaway with a great pass by Nazem Kadri. Teams have changed, players have changed but the uniform crest hasn't, so we know what they're capable of.

As for other matchups, I think the Calgary Flames will go pretty far, and beat the hot St. Louis Blues in the Western Final.

Boston pulled Rask with 2:35 left, but Tavares scored off a center-ice faceoff with 79 seconds left. In fact, they recorded the same amount of hits and shots as Boston; the Maple Leafs were just a lot more effective in front of the goal. The last attempt was by Philadelphia's Ville Leino in 2010.

Indications that the Leafs have returned better equipped this spring, however, weren't at all exclusive to Marner, who had already extended his postseason points streak to seven games before stepping up to the circle with the game-tying goal in the first period. Then in the second period, the old bugaboo of the short-handed goal against came back to haunt the Bruins.
