Grease Movie Prequel in Development

The film stars John Travolta as Danny and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy. John August, who penned the Aladdin and Big Fish scripts, will be writing the new film, which our sister website Deadline confirmed on April 9.

A Grease prequel? Tell me more, tell me more.

41 years after the mega-popular musical Grease first cruised into theaters and 37 years after its sequel debuted, a Grease prequel is in development at Paramount Pictures.

It is not clear whether the new movie will be a musical and there have been no cast announcements.

The title of the movie comes from a line from Summer Nights, a duet between the two Rydell High school kids and their vastly differing accounts of the night, with Danny boasting of sexual conquest down among the sand dunes, while Sandy thrills at the couple's emotional intimacy. The star-crossed teens started up a fling that involved splashing around on the beach, going bowling in the arcade, strolling while drinking lemonade, getting hot and heavy under the dock, and staying out... until 10 o'clock.

The big question, of course, is why does a prequel about their early love life need to exist when Danny and Sandy's early relationship is discussed - and even overtly shown - in the original movie? "She's every guy's dream'".

The obsession with prequels continues.

In 2016, Fox aired a live version of Grease starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens which won five Emmys.
