NASA Is Planning Its First All-Female Spacewalk

Koch is scheduled to launch for the station March 14 aboard a Roscosmos Soyuz spacecraft along with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin.

On March 29, the world will witness two Nasa Astronauts namely Christina Koch and Anne McClain undertake a spectacular spacewalk.

NASA didn't originally intend to make the March 29 spacewalk historic, a spokesperson told HuffPost.

US astronaut Christina Hammock Koch, a member of the International Space Station expedition, attends her final exam at the Gagarin Cosmonauts' Training Center in Star City outside Moscow, Russia, Feb. 20, 2019. According to NASA, astronauts conduct spacewalks for a number of reasons: to carry out experiments in space, to test new equipment, or to fix satellites and spacecraft.

Just in time for International Women's Day, NASA announced Wednesday that it will be conducting the first-ever, all-female spacewalk, CNN reports. Schedules and assignments for EVA missions can change, but it will be a spacewalk for the history books if all goes as planned.

"As now scheduled, the March 29 spacewalk will be the first with only women", NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Schierholz told CNN in an emailed statement Wednesday.

Now, with Canadian aerospace engineer Kristen Faccio operating as the crew's ground support from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, the historic mission will be an appropriate milestone for female trailblazers during the month of March: Women's History Month. This is going to be the first time in space for McClain and the first spaceflight for Koch. Astronauts also conduct spacewalks to fix satellites or spacecraft that are already in space, instead of having them brought back to Earth to fix.

McClain and Koch were part of the 2013 NASA class that was 50 percent women. She was followed almost 20 years later by the second woman in space, Svetlana Savitskaya, who also did a spacewalk two years later.

The spacewalk could last anywhere between five to eight hours, wow!
