Mumbai footbridge collapse kills five and injures dozens

Just after the incident, Mumbai Police had tweeted: "Foot over-bridge connecting CST platform 1 north end with B T Lane near Times of India building has collapsed".

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant rushed to the site of accident, and assured an inquiry into the FOB collapse.

"Deeply saddened to learn about the #MumbaiBridgCollapse where several people are still reportedly trapped", Mr. Surjewala tweeted.

The death toll has jumped to 4 in the FOB collapse outside CST railway station.

The foot over bridge on Mumbai Municipal Corporation side collapsed about 07:45 pm today.

"In an unfortunate incident, a portion of a foot overbridge (FOB) over road outside CSMT station collapsed".

The railway shrugged away from the responsibility saying that it was a public bridge and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was responsible for its maintenance.

"However, we are extending all our supports to the victims".

The bridge, which was under fix according to multiple Indian media reports, gave way around 7:30pm (14:00 GMT) on Thursday as rush hour commuters made their way into Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The bridge wasn't in a bad condition, it required minor repairs for which work was underway.

An eyewitness said the over-bridge was being used by pedestrians even as fix works were ongoing. "Why was it not closed until the work was completed, it'll also be probed", he said.

The state's education minister, Vinod Tawde, said an audit of the bridge's safety was carried out previous year.

"I have discussed the issue with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as well as with CR General Manager D K Sharma, BMC chief Ajoy Mehta and joint police commissioner (L&W) Deven Bharti". He said action will be taken against the firm that conducted the structural audit of the bridge. Even after that if such an incident happened, it raises a question on the audit. Inquiry will be done.

A case has been registered against officials of Central Railway and the BMC in connection with the incident, police said.

"Ex-gratia of Rs 5 Lakh each will be given to the families of those who died in the incident and compensation of Rs 50,000 each will be given to the injured, state govt will provide for their treatment", said CM Fadnavis. "This is failure of the government and the system", he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressed sadness at the incident.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered condolences to the families of those killed in the incident and prayed speedy recovery to the injured. "The Maharashtra Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected", he added.
