Kyle Busch sweeps Phoenix with Cup Series win

Kyle Busch took home the top prize in Sundays Ticket Guardian 500 at ISM Raceway for his 199th career NASCAR win, and his 52nd career Cup win.

The 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season is in full swing.

Busch has won three times in the desert, including the playoff race last fall.

Martin Truex Jr. also got around Blaney to finish second, taking advantage of a No. 19 vehicle that kept getting better on longer runs. Aric Almirola was fourth and Denny Hamlin was fifth. "You've got to race hard first and worry about fuel afterwards".

"This makes last weekend feel so much stupider", he said.

"Not for me to worry about", he said. But both managed to get to the finish without coming seriously close to running dry, though Blaney had to make an effort to save fuel in order to do so. "I wanted to salvage a top-5 out of the day".

Despite the success, Busch remains adamant that he still has more to prove, going out to even set himself a lofty goal of getting to 100 Cup wins before he retires.

"I'm always leery about all-time when you talk in pro sports", team owner Joe Gibbs said, "because there's been so many great ones".

Over the last 22 laps, Truex made up about seven seconds on Busch, but that still left him 1.259 seconds behind the leader at the end of the race.

Kevin Harvick had won four of the past five spring races at ISM Raceway, and his nine total Cup Series wins at the mile-long speedway are a record.

In the final segment, Elliott reported a vibration before spinning on the next lap, bringing out a caution. "I think he was kind of riding back there, too".

Busch made his move following a restart on Lap 239 of the 312-lap race.

Kyle Busch had to back off the throttle in the late stages at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, but he had just enough fuel to grab his first victory of 2019.

To get the victory, Busch had to track down Blaney of Team Penske - who led 95 laps - over the final 50 laps. He may well accomplish that feat as early as next week, when he will again be racing in both the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity races.
