Snow, ice become more widespread Saturday night, Sunday morning

Weather conditions will vary across the state and motorists are urged to keep a close eye on the elements and suspend unnecessary travel during and immediately following the storm to allow VDOT crews to effectively clear and treat roads.

Widespread snow is expected to continue into Saturday morning with temperatures in the lower 30s.

Winter Storm Warnings have been expanded to include Washington DC and cover nearly all of Virginia, The also include a few counties in Southeast Maryland, Winter Storm Warnings have also been expanded into Western North Carolina. The total amount should be very light, at less than one half inch.

Forecasters said to expect mixed precipitation, with total snow accumulations "of up to two inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze..." A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all other areas.

By late morning Saturday, officials had reported almost 11 inches of snow at Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, where most flights were canceled or delayed.

Snowfall pushed through the Chicago area until early Sunday, dropping just under 4 inches on the city.

Various Twitterati used #snurlough and #snowpocalypse2019 hashtag linkages to share pictures of the event. More than 30 of those crashes and half of those disabled vehicles were in the Fairfax district, VSP said.

Almost 250 flights were canceled nationwide and another 400 delayed as of 10:45 a.m.

The advisory is also being placed on southwest and western Pennsylvania, east central OH and northern and northern panhandle of West Virginia.
