Facebook debuts Lasso as a counter to TikTok

The company has just released the app Lasso for iOS and Android, and it's obviously created to offer the same functionality as TikTok, a video app that's become increasingly popular among teens.

Product manager Andy Huang tweeted the launch of the app on Friday, saying, "Lasso, FB's new short form video app is now available in the USA!" TikTok which merged with musical.ly lets users create 15 second videos. The company spokesperson also added they are excited to see the high potential and also the company will be gathering feedback and people as well as the creators.

Users can log in to Lasso with their Instagram or Facebook account, The Verge reported.

Lasso seamlessly connects to Facebook so you can post your videos to your story with a single tap.

The publication noted that the new program Facebook like the already existing Chinese app TikTok.

It's interesting that Facebook has released Lasso with little to no official announcement, after revealing in October that the app was in development. The app includes video-editing tools, and helps users add music and text. Users can also login with Facebook or Instagram to get instant personalization.

As expected one can sign in to Lasso Facebook based or related applications like Instagram or create an account using Facebook. At present, users can not make their Lasso profiles private.

Facebook is launching the new product when TikTok is growing in popularity, especially among teens. According to a survey by Pew Research Center survey this year, 51%of United States teens ages 13 to 17 use Facebook, compared with 72% for Instagram and 69% who are on Snapchat.

Though Facebook seems to be playing it cool with the Lasso release, the company knows what's at stake.
