Lottery officials have raised the estimated jackpot for Tuesday (Oct. 16) night's drawing to $667 million, making it the third-largest grand prize in USA history.

The Mega Millions jackpot has not been won since July 24 and Monday afternoon eclipsed the previous record $656 million from March of 2012. Winning tickets in that drawing came from Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

"Seventy-six cents of every $2 ticket that's sold goes directly to education, funding things like scholarships, school construction and pre-K education spots", said Kathleen Jacob with the NC Education Lottery. Mega Millions drawing days are Tuesdays and Fridays, with the next Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday, October 16. You'll see those Mega Millions numbers Tuesday night on NewsCenter 16 at 11.

The next Mega Millions drawing will be held Tuesday at 11 p.m. ET, and tickets must be purchased by 10:00 p.m. Tuesday to be eligible.

The Powerball has reached $345 million. The amount you will win is likely $0, because the odds of winning either jackpot are one in several hundred million. The prize must be claimed within one year at the lottery headquarters in Lansing.

Mega Millions is available in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Jackpot winners have a choice to make: cash or annuity.
