Manny Pacquiao Says He & Adrien Broner Will Be Fighting in January

Manny Pacquiao's next fight appears to not be a rematch against Floyd Mayweather, but against Adrien Broner.

WBA welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao announced that he will defend his title against the American Adrien Broner in January 2019 in the United States.

"I believe Broner was chosen specifically because he has a style, particularly on the defensive side, that resembles Mayweather's", said veteran fight analyst Ed Tolentino. Pacquiao told reporters Wednesday night, October 17, referring to his scheduled defense of the World Boxing Association welterweight crown against Broner in January in the United States.

Ahead of the fight against big-punching Matthysse, Pacquiao said he considered himself the "underdog", but he rolled back the years in the July bout.

Mayweather said on Wednesday that "on my end we can make (the Khabib fight) happen". About two weeks ago, Pacquiao signed with Premier Boxing Champions founder Al Haymon to become his adviser. However, a source close to Mayweather said he was not going to fight in December.

Since then Pacquiao has defied calls to retire and promised to fight again, which has prompted unclear reports about a range of possible contenders.

His past two fights have been overseas.

Pacquiao claimed Thursday Mayweather's next fight will take place on New Year's Eve.

"If I can finish it earlier than seven rounds, why not", said Pacquiao, who is the only boxer in history to win world titles in eight weight classes. Mayweather on Wednesday told TMZ he's willing to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for a "nine-figure payday", but New Year's Eve nearly certainly is too soon for them to square off.

Top Rank agreed to pay Pacquiao $1.7 million for the fight's USA rights as well as the right of a first negotiation and last look on the US rights for his next fight. They ultimately settled, with Top Rank paying Pacquiao $300,000 on the Matthysse fight and Pacquiao no longer having any obligation to the company for his US broadcast rights.

The most recent fight for Pacquiao in the U.S. was in Las Vegas in November 2016, when he won by a decision against Jessie Vargas to earn a welterweight world title.
