Manhunt for suspects after Georgia police officer is fatally shot

Officer Antwan Toney was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville after being shot responding to 911 call about a suspicious vehicle behind Shiloh Middle School just after 2:30 p.m. Gwinnett County Police said Toney and a second officer were attempting to make contact with the occupants of the vehicle when they were fired upon. Maynard remained at large early Sunday and should be considered armed and risky, police said.

No other officers are hurt and police could not confirm whether or not shots were fired or if any suspects were shot.

"The people that worked with Officer Toney on a daily basis recalled a very jovial person who was dedicated to his job and dedicated to his community", Ayers said.

Maynard is charged with aggravated assault and murder, authorities said in a news conference. The suspects initially fled the scene in a black sedan, but they crashed the vehicle less than a mile away and continued their flight on foot.

Authorities say two suspects, including one still being sought by police, have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a George police officer. That second officer, whose name has not yet been released, pulled Officer Toney out of the line of fire. It did not hit the officer's vest, Smith said.

Officer Toney's family and friends erected a memorial for Officer Toney on Saturday and gathered to remember his life on Saturday night.

The slain officer was the first killed in the line of duty since 1993, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.

Police presence was heavy Saturday evening in neighborhoods a few miles east of Stone Mountain as officers, SWAT and K9 teams searched for Maynard. Investigators said the bullet missed the vest worn by the 30-year-old officer. "We thank you for your service and pray with the Gwinnett County Police Department". Before he was an officer, he had been a security guard, police said.
