Finau will be the first homegrown Utahn to play in the Ryder Cup, after being selected by USA captain Jim Furyk. Finau's ambitious goals include being "considered one of the greats", said his coach, Boyd Summerhays, and "being on Ryder Cup teams - and the level of play required to make it - will only further build his confidence". "He checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to go for him". "I also played on two Junior Ryder Cup teams".
Finau boosted his chances by joining a group that played at Le Golf National earlier this year. He was paired with Furyk during the first two days at the US PGA Championship, and struggled in the opening round before he tied the championship record by making ten birdies in the second round.
The eight US players who qualified automatically are US Open and US PGA Championship champion Brooks Koepka, Masters victor Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.
Finau is one of seven players on the US team that is in his 20s.
Play takes place in Paris, France, on September 28-30. "The final Captain's Pick is in".More news: Trump comments sting in Puerto Rico amid slow storm recovery

"I grew up playing team sports, and I know what it's like to be on a team", he said.
The other main contender for the final spot, Xander Schauffele, was expected by some to grab the final spot if he won the BMW tournament, but he just missed out on a playoff by one shot and tied for third place.
Justin Rose's consolation for losing a sudden-death play-off at the BMW to Keegan Bradley was becoming the world No 1, overtaking Johnson.
Finau's Ryder Cup opportunity is historic for the Utah golf community.
"Excited to join the team and do whatever it takes to help us bring home a victory!"
