An estimated 5.2 million people are within 125 kilometers (77 miles) of the projected path of the Super Typhoon, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

"We're anxious for the 10 million people in the Philippines living in the path of this destructive storm, including those who have been displaced several times due to the monsoon rains last July and August", Philippines Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon said in a statement.

The two lifeless bodies of the two women in the Philippines were pulled from the soil of a hillside that collapsed after the storm's torrential rains, police said.

Officials said about 1,000 homes in the province had sustained damage.

Mangkhut's sustained winds weakened to 170 kilometres per hour with gusts of up to 260kph after it sliced across Luzon's flood-prone rice plains and mountain provinces toward the South China Sea, aiming at southern China and Hong Kong, where residents were bracing for the worst.

The area is home to around 10 million people, many of whom live in flimsy wooden shelters.

Ninia Grace Abedes abandoned her bamboo hut and took her four children to a school building serving as an emergency shelter.

The center said that the typhoon's winds are equivalent to a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane.

"The weather here is still good but we're moving them now because it's very important that when it comes, people will be away from peril", Mamba said, adding that a change in the typhoon's track had prompted authorities to rapidly reassess where to redeploy emergency teams and supplies.

"Among all the typhoons this year, this one (Mangkhut) is the strongest", Japan Meteorological Agency forecaster Hiroshi Ishihara told AFP. Mangkhut is now a Cat 5 Typhoon packing winds of 285 kmph.

The storm is predicted to move on to China's heavily populated southern coast this weekend.

The Philippines endures about 20 typhoons and storms...

"Last time we had a super typhoon, there were 14,000-plus of totally destroyed houses and about 40,000-plus of partially destroyed houses", he told news channel ANC. The region has a history of violent and deadly typhoons, such as Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which killed about 7,000 people.

Meteorologists have warned that the storm may have a "high humanitarian impact" based on the high wind speeds and the exposed population located in vulnerable areas.

Gusty winds with occasional moderate to heavy rains are expected over Visayas, while scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains over Palawan, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao and CARAGA.

"As we go forward, this number will go higher", said Ricardo Jalad, head of the national civil defence office, referring to the death toll.

As the storm is on pace to hit China's southern coast on Sunday, Cathay Pacific warned travellers that it expected more than 400 flight cancellations over the next three days.

The president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, told citizens to be ready as powerful waves pounded the shore.

Paciente also cautioned residents that even if the typhoon weakens after making landfall, it will remain incredibly destructive.
