Although the storm is now a Category 1 hurricane, it is still dumping feet of rain over coastal communities.

Hurricane Florence lumbered ashore in North Carolina with howling 90 miles per hour winds and terrifying storm surge early Friday, ripping apart buildings and knocking out power to a half-million homes and businesses as it settled in for what could be a long and extraordinarily destructive drenching. The child's father was injured and taken to a hospital.

A spokesperson in North Carolina's Pender County also said another woman died of an unspecified health condition after calling emergency services, as medics could not reach her because fallen trees were blocking the road.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station say Hurricane Florence is so massive, they had to use a super wide-angle lens to capture photographs of the storm from space.

Florence's forward movement during the day slowed to a near-standstill - sometimes it was going no faster than a human can walk - and that enabled it to pile on the rain.

Forecasters warned of catastrophic flooding and other mayhem from the monster storm, which is only Category 1, but physically sprawling and risky.

Parts of North and SC were forecast to get as much as 40 inches of rain (1 metre).

That's about 220 miles from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m. September 14, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline. Numerous evacuees had pets with them.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", New Bern city officials said on Twitter. "People who live in New Bern have experienced hurricanes before, but it has been a long time since we have experienced something like this".

The outer bands of wind and rain caused by the storm were already lashing North Carolina on Thursday morning.

Being such a small number, first responders have made clear to them the situation when the storm makes its expected complete landfall by 8 a.m. Friday morning.

The riverfront town of New Bern, North Carolina, was submerged overnight as Hurricane Florence brought a 10-foot surge of sea water. The Philippines placed the main Luzon island under storm alert and said as many as 824,000 Filipinos may have to be evacuated before the storm hits land on Saturday morning. He apparently was blown down after he went outside to check on his hunting dogs, local media said.

Bertha Bradley said she has never favored evacuating ahead of hurricanes. "These are folks who are maybe in one-story buildings and they're seeing the floodwaters rise". Video footage showed parking lots in the riverfront town of New Bern turn into shallow lakes of dirty gray water as heavy rain fell.
