Twitter Reacts to New Oscars Popular Film Category: ‘This Is So Lazy’

The biggest change to the Academy Awards comes in the addition of a new category that is being designed around achievement in a popular film. Mark Harris, the Five Came Back author, said that the idea of bringing a popular film category was "ghetto" and people would "perceive it that way".

Edited excerpts of those presentations will then be shown during the broadcast.

"The new category will be introduced this coming year, at the 91st Oscars".

Could this be "Black Panther's" big chance?

"We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world", Hudson and Bailey wrote. The 2019 ceremony will still air on February 24, while the 2020 show will move to February 9.

By contrast, none of the 10 highest grossing films of previous year - including The Fate of the Furious, Despicable Me 3 and Beauty and The Beast, which brought in upwards of $1 billion - were nominated for major awards.

And the inclusion of what amounts to a "most popular" category is also likely to be a source of friction for both film connoisseurs and some sections of the film industry who are not represented at the Oscars. Others anxious that the creation of the new category would effectively ruin Black Panther's chance at Best Picture.

The board has now said that they are "committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours".

The telecast has also limited its run time to three hours or less, revealing that select categories will be presented during commercial breaks.

The 2019 Oscars will look a little different. While the Board of Governors probably hoped the fresh category would excite viewers and perhaps get those ratings up - spoiler alert - Hollywood pretty much hates it. And while plenty of award shows have seen ratings decline, Variety reports that none suffered almost this badly.

So expect the Best Picture category to stay "Best Drama That Makes You Cry", and this new category to be the one where you pull for the big franchise movie you love, or maybe that exceptional comedy.

Best Achievement In Popular Film. No further details were shared, but that category will probably air live, and be a nod to massive comic book movies like "Black Panther" - which just hit another domestic milestone.
