Jose Mourinho is desperate to strengthen his Manchester United defence before the transfer window closes on Thursday and a deal for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld is reportedly close to completion, although a planned move for Barcelona's Yerry Mina has collapsed.
Jose Mourinho had made the Belgian centre-back a top priority at the end of last season.
The negotiations have played out publicly, with United using links with Harry Maguire and more recently Yerry Mina to try and bargain with their Premier League rivals. But the Foxes rejected a £65m bid for Maguire, which forced United to look elsewhere.
Alderweireld has refused to sign a new deal at Tottenham so the north Londoners are open to cashing-in before a release clause kicks-in next summer that would allow the defender to leave for just £25m. Spurs were adamant in asking £75m for the defender, but United weren't keen to shell out as much. The 23-year-old shone for Colombia at the 2018 World Cup, scoring twice with powerful headers as he first got them out of the group stage and then took their Round of 16 clash against England to extra time.
Although the centre-half featured sparsely last season after a falling out with Mauricio Pochettino, Alderweireld is still a top-class defensive option and cannot simply be replaced in the pecking order by the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers.
However, Sky Sports reporter Graves seems to think that Manchester United could well complete a deal to sign the 29-year-old defender before the deadline.
