Emery: Arsenal lacked belief in Manchester City defeat

Manchester City, who romped to Premier League success by 19 points last season, began the defence of their title with an impressive win away to an Arsenal side playing under new Spanish manager Unai Emery on Sunday.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva saw Unai Emery's first competitive game end in defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

"(We will be) helping with his quality and also getting better with his quality and his data in this year.

"We only have three players: Carl Jenkinson, David Ospina, and Joel Campbell, with the possibility to leave".

Having taken charge of the Gunners during the transfer window, the Spaniard, who has a dismal head-to-head record against Guardiola, having never beaten his compatriot, needs his players to show that the Arsene Wenger era can be let go. No way. I don't want to forget what we have done last season.

Granit Xhaka should start and we could see the best of him now that he won't have the defensive duties quite so much following the arrival of Lucas Torreira.

Guardiola, whose Barcelona came up against Emery as Valencia coach, is in only his third season at City.

Arsenal threw players forward in the dying minutes of the match as they tried to find some consolation, but City held on for a comfortable win.

"We finished with the spirit I want". In an ideal world both would start but I'm not sure we can afford that luxury against a team like Man City.

Liverpool have had to wait a year to get Naby Keita after sealing the deal to bring him from RB Leipzig 12 months ago, but on the evidence of a storming display from the Guinean in Sunday's 4-0 thrashing of West Ham it'll be worth the wait.

"Petr Cech had a very good preseason and today he played well also".

Emery's side continued with their pressing approach and nearly forced an equaliser as Hector Bellerin cut inside and tested Ederson with a drilled effort. "Also, Leno is starting with us".

Another worry for Arsenal is that their left-back situation worsened when Ainsley Maitland-Niles hobbled off in the first half with a leg injury.

Cech suffered a heart-in-mouth moment as Arsenal tried, and failed, to play out from the back - the former Chelsea man nearly turning the ball into his own goal as he attempted to pass across to Mustafi.

"Nacho started working with the group yesterday, and maybe he can arrive for the next match", Emery said.
