Eleider Alvarez Scores Huge Upset, KOs Sergey Kovalev on HBO

This will be the main event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.

The Krusher Sergey Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KOs) made a huge comeback when he chose to change up his lifestyle and redicated himself to boxing, he fired long time trainer John David Jackson and felt he was just there to collect a check and not help him. Bivol cruised to a decision victory in a fight many have prematurely labelled a "snoozefest".

Alvarez started to show some true power in the third, forcing Kovalev to feel his full force. Murtazaliev immediately rocked him, landed several clean head shots and then dropped him with a vicious left-right combination.

After the fight, Kovalev was taken to the hospital to get checked out. "I hope it will be an enjoyable fight for you". Alvarez had been landing hard jabs and short, crisp counters prior to the knockdown, but Kovalev got lazy defensively, and Alvarez made him pay.

Unbeaten Eleider Alvarez knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the seventh round on Saturday with a stunning upset victory to capture the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight title. Sergey was dominating and Alvarez came back and stopped him. "He was great for six rounds and then he faltered".

The Kovalev camp said repeatedly they want the fight, whereas Bivol and his team felt he needed a little more experience and exposure. While Alvarez was taking punches, he was also animated and talking to Kovalev during the round.

Alvarez initially floored Kovalev with a big, straight right in the seventh. I didn't know what happened.

Meanwhile, Bivol successfully defended his WBA light heavyweight belt with a unanimous decision over Isaac Chilemba, who fights out of South Africa. When Ward retired and vacated his titles last fall, Kovalev regained one of his old belts in his first fight back by knocking out Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in the second round in November.

Sergey Kovalev vs Eleider Alvarez, Dmitry Bivol vs Isaac Chilemba LIVE on August 4, 2018 at 10/7 PM ET/PT on HBO World Championship Boxing.

Adonis Stevenson, the Montreal-based light heavy champ holding the WBC strap evaded him on two occasions, with promoter Yvon Michel figured out a benefit package as compensation for Eleider Alvarez's deferment of the inevitable.

"I am ready for all the best fighters in my division", Alvarez said. "I$3 just missed one punch and [I] couldn't continue the fight".

This writer didn't catch the whole Bivol-Chilemba fight, but that matchmaking was worse, despite being defensible on a competitive level, because there was no way a spoiler like Chilemba was going to build any interest in Bivol's next fight, especially because Bivol is a conservative technician first who scores knockouts second. Bivol started the year off with a strong 12th round stoppage win over Sullivan Barrera on the co-feature bout of Kovalev's quick title defense win over Igor Mikhalkin, building to a potential unification fight.
