Bredesen, Blackburn win primaries in race for US Senate

"I'll probably vote for a Democratic governor, and sadly because of our president, I am probably going to change my party affiliation", said Dimel, explaining that she voted for Trump in a tough decision but no longer supports him.

Lee faces former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, who easily won the Democratic primary, in the November general election.

Blackburn served on Trump's transition team and has not shied away from embracing the president.

Lee will win the GOP nomination, CNN projects, defeating Black, who was backed by Vice President Mike Pence.

Axios reports, "President Trump's endorsement is worth its weight in gold for Republican candidates in 2018.Four of the six who have won had Trump's blessing via endorsement - Lou Barletta in Pennsylvania, Jim Renacci in Ohio, Kevin Cramer in North Dakota and Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee".

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Basking in the afterglow of an emphatic Republican primary victory in her Senate bid, U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn proclaimed it a win for the agenda of President Donald Trump, a statement from Tennessee voters that they want to give him their full support.

"Whereas [Democratic candidate] Phil Bredesen is a poster child for the failed Obama policies of the past, Marsha is a champion for the conservative reforms that Tennesseans overwhelmingly supported in 2016".

The race on the Democratic side, like the Senate contest, was more of a foregone conclusion.

A general election win would be historic for either Black or Blackburn, since the state has never elected a woman as governor or USA senator. The last Tennessee Democrat to win a Senate seat was former Vice President Al Gore in 1990.

Bredesen blew past nominal opposition in Thursday's primary, as expected. "He ran a great campaign and now will finish off the job in November".

The candidates running for the Republican nomination for governor are U.S. Rep. Diane Black, Randy Boyd, House Speaker Beth Harwell and Bill Lee. NPR's Jessica Taylor reported on Blackburn, "She has always been a loyal conservative foot soldier and ticks off in her video the ways she would stand with President Trump - repealing the Affordable Care Act, backing the president's immigration ban and his border wall and his feud with the NFL over kneeling during the national anthem". Pence and Trump have already attacked Bredesen on her behalf, saying he's too liberal for Tennessee and would fall in line with Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

In the end, the race was less about political ideology than it was about character, likeability, and outsiders versus insiders, and in that choice, voters overwhelmingly preferred Lee.

Money shouldn't be a problem for either candidate.

The Blackburn-Bredesen showdown is among several races crucial to Trump's plans to maintain control of the Senate, where Republicans are defending a narrow two-seat majority.
