BE PREPARED | First West Nile virus case confirmed in Ventura County

In a news release issued Wednesday, officials said that in their latest round of testing 124 mosquitoes from throughout the state tested positive for West Nile virus, along with two birds.

No new samples of mosquitoes positive for West Nile were reported in either Northampton or Lehigh counties August 15, however mosquitoes in the city of Bethlehem, the city of Allentown, Upper Saucon Township and other Lehigh Valley municipalities have tested positive this summer.

West Nile is a treatable disease, but "the best cure is prevention", Mayeux said. According to the Government of Saskatchewan, there have been no cases of Horses or birds spreading the virus to humans. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing from dusk to dawn or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.

"With increased temperatures these past few weeks numerous mosquito samples from across the state have been confirmed to be carrying West Nile virus", Office of Mosquito Control Coordination Administrator Scott Crans said. In most cases, those infected have suffered problems with their central nervous system - mainly forms of encephalitis or meningitis.The national federation of Greek hospital workers has accused authorities of "indifference" in response to the rise in cases of the virus.

West Nile virus is something for health care providers to consider along with all the other diseases that cause flu-like symptoms, he said.

"It is important for people to take proper precautions against mosquitoes for themselves and their animals in order to stay healthy".

Discard or turn over cans, plastic containers and ceramic pots outside your home to avoid accumulating water. When pools are not in use, then use pool covers drain water when necessary.

 Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.

- Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes and fix or replace screens with tears or holes.
