Barty glides into Canadian Open semi-final

It's obviously upsetting that I didn't win, but I think I got better than the last final we played.

"I'm very happy to come through and get a little bit better during the match".

Top seed Simona Halep sent Caroline Garcia packing for the second consecutive year at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Friday with a 7-5 6-1 win to set up a semifinal showdown with Ashleigh Barty on Saturday.

Spaniard Carolina Garcia, the No.6 seed, was combative in the first set before Halep secured a crucial break to win the opener 7-5.

"Every time I play her, she makes me a better player, she makes me raise my level".

The fluidness and handsome shot making Garcia showed in the Sharapova match was almost invisible when she played the no. 1 Simona Halep. there was a gleamer of brilliant strategies at the beginning of the match when Garcia went up 3-2 and the commentator even remarked that "You can begin to feel that the Garcia momentum is building".

Halep won her third title of the year and 18th overall.

The top-ranked Romanian will play for the title Sunday against the third-ranked Sloane Stephens in a rematch of Halep's victory in the French Open final. I thought she played well. "Just going to kind of take it all in, realize I did a good job this week, and I can be proud of myself for that". However, there were just as many pulling for Stephens in a match of two players who don't overpower with their serves but hammer groundstrokes down the lines.

Halep broke the third-seeded Stephens with a crosscourt victor to take a 5-4 lead and serve for the set.

After a shaky start, Halep won three straight games to take the first set and dominated the second set behind pinpoint serving and stout defence.

Stephens added three more breaks to take the second set, but lost her serve to open the third.

She broke back for 2-2, but then suffered a letdown as Halep broke service twice more to take the lead.
