Adrian Peterson to meet with the Redskins on Monday

The Redskins agreed to terms with free agent running back Adrian Peterson, per multiple reports and confirmed by NBC Sports Washington.

The Redskins suddenly find themselves short-handed in the backfield after losing Derrius Guice, Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall to injuries in the first two preseason games. Peterson signed a two-year deal with New Orleans, but he was traded to Arizona on October 10.

The details of Peterson's contract with Washington have yet to be released. Although he was used sparingly, he put together 296 rushing yards on 69 carries and 1 touchdown (a 4.3 yards/carry average).

Washington could use the help as the franchise has only three healthy running backs - Chris Thompson, Rob Kelley and Kapri Bibbs - on the roster.

But Peterson's season ended after he suffered a season-ending neck injury in November.

But despite his accolades - Peterson, a four-time all pro selection and 2012 NFL MVP, is 12th on the all-time rushing yards list - he remained unsigned after posting only 529 rushing yards in 10 games a year ago.

If Peterson still believes he should be a starter in the National Football League today, then Washington is likely going to say no thanks. The team also brought in veterans Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa over the weekend. Head coach Jay Gruden told reporters that he wanted to see the progress of Perine and Marshall before the team made any roster decisions. "So I think I have three in house that I feel very good about and maybe get another in here to compete and go from there".

Peterson has amassed 12,276 rushing yards in his career and rushed for a career-high 2,097 during his MVP season in 2012.

Roughly two hours before news of Peterson's imminent signing broke, Guice tweeted a photo from a Florida hospital, where he's set to undergo knee surgery.
