Former US President Obama lost 2.5 million followers; Trump saw his follower count drop by roughly 400,000 and Kim Kardashian unloaded 1.7 million followers in the last day.

Barack Obama lost over 2 million followers from his previous 103.63 million, leaving him at 101 million, while President Donald Trump lost 340,000 followers, taking him from 53.4 million to 53.1 million.

Kenyatta and Ruto lost 16,098 and 1,465 followers respectively as at 2:30 pm on Friday when Capital FM News last checked the number of followers they had on Twitter.

The social media platform is removing locked accounts from follower counts to increase credibility.

The great Twitter purge has begun - and famous users have already lost millions of fake followers. On 11 July, he had 34.89 million followers but the number dropped to 34.47 million in just 24 hours. He's likely still going to keep tweeting out news and calling others out on their fake news reports, but the president and many others are going to be doing it to smaller audiences thanks to the Twitter purge.

Prominent people and celebrities have started noticing the drop in followership.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", she wrote. The company culled tens of millions of suspicious accounts on Wednesday and caused some of its highest profile users to hemorrhage followers.

YouTube's official Twitter handle witnessed a 2.8 percent dip and now has 70.39 million followers. Shah Rukh Khan lost nearly 3.5 lakh followers (35.7 million) while Amitabh Bachchan registered an even bigger loss, at over 4 lakh (34.5 million).

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", said Twitter in a blog.

Popular radio presenter Shaffie Weru also spoke about the purge making light of the situation noting: "Twitter is doing away with all fake followers.nobody can stop reggae my frens (friends), we are all dying".
