Donald Trump Jr, accompanied by his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and then campaign chairman Paul Manafort, had in June 2016 met a group of people including the Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who had offered politically sensitive information about Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate.

CBS host Margaret Brennan asked Giuliani, who is representing the president, in an appearance on Face the Nation how many times Trump appeared in materials that federal investigators seized from the office of his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

"Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam", Mr. Trump said. CNN first reported the news Thursday night.

"There's no way the president is going to be talking about setting up a corporation and using cash unless you're a complete idiot and the president's not an idiot", Giuliani told Fox News in an earlier interview. Giuliani has said Mr. Trump never made a payment to AMI.

Giuliani said Saturday on ABC News that Trump's team has hired experts to analyze the recording.

The former NY mayor's criticisms of Cohen come just a few months after he called him "an honest, honorable lawyer" in a separate ABC News interview.

Mr. Trump's failure to publicly denounce Putin's role in the 2016 election caused concern across the political world, leading many to question if the president had more faith in a known USA adversary than his own intelligence chiefs. He said I only made it because I personally love the president and Melania.

In a statement to CNN anchor Jake Tapper, a source close to Cohen denied Giuliani's claim, saying, "You mean Rudy is floating reckless, fact-free, false, wild speculation as if he were unhinged?"

"It seems to me the worst that you could say, assuming that Cohen is telling the truth now, is that Donald Trump lied back in 2017", Mr. Wallace said Friday.

Earlier this month, Nunberg was reportedly pitching himself for television appearances with the description of "Michael Cohen's Friend".

The US justice department has been investigating Mr Cohen for months, having raided his home, office and hotel room in search of documents related to a 130,000 dollar (£99,000) payment the attorney facilitated before the 2016 election to Stormy Daniels.

In April, Trump said in a tweet that Cohen is "a fine person ... who I have always liked & respected".

Following the release of this audio, Giuliani attempted to discredit Michael Cohen in an effort to protect his client.
