Instead, Denver was able to deal the final years of Chandler and Arthur's contracts for the added price of a protected first-round pick in exchange for Whitehead, whom Wojnarowski reports will be waived.

In the 2016-17 season with the Boston Celtics, Thomas averaged a career-high 28.9 points per game while leading the Cs to an Eastern Conference-best record of 53-29. He played three seasons in Sacramento and during his past year there, he played under Denver's coach Mike Malone.

After missing those the first 36 games of last season, Thomas returned to average 14.7 points and 4.5 assists in 15 games (14 starts). He was traded to Cleveland last summer along with Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a pair of picks for Kyrie Irving. With the Cavaliers struggling, however, they dealt Thomas, Channing Frye and a 2018 first-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 8 for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr.

Agreeing to just a one-year deal at the veteran's minimum is a far cry from what many thought Thomas would have been able to garner as a free agent not long ago. The Nuggets missed the 2018 playoffs by one game and they fully expect to make the postseason in 2019, counting on Thomas to help guide them there.

He'll now come off the bench behind 21-year old Jamal Murray, who is entering his third National Basketball Association season.
